Verizon and FTTP

For anyone not keeping up with these things, Verizon has stated that they'll get their new FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) out to a million homes by the end of the year. Over this fiber, DSL speeds will reach 30mb/sec down. Here's a link:

So, for Dave this means the 15mb down and 2mb up package for a mere $45/month. What's better is this email I got from the city of Wylie, where I live:

"Dear Mr. Urig,

Thank you for your email. Currently, Verizon is interested in making Wylie another of their "fiber-optic" cities. There have been a few meetings between Verizon and City staff, and talks are continuing.

If you have further questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Finally, done with a hell week at work! And what a good surprise I get when I come home... Two letters on my door, here's the first from Verizon:

"Dear Resident:

During the past several months, representatives of Verizon have been working in the greater Wylie area designing and engineering an upgrade to the current telecommunications system. This upgrade will be 'state-of-the-art' fiber optic communications cables and technology installed in the road right-of-ways and alleys surrounding new and existing homes in the greater Wylie area.

Beginning in early July 2004, and continuing throughout the year, representatives of Verizon will be installing this fiber optic technology throughout the City of Wylie, including your neighborhood. When in place, these new telecommunications facilities will allow Verizon to offer you and your neighbors the following value added services:

- Improved Quality of Service
- Improved network reliabitlity and survivability
- High speed data services to residential and small business customers over fiber optics

Verizon will use existing conduits and other under ground infrastructure where possible. Verizon will also use new, modern technology that allows fiber optic lines to be placed in the ground without open trenching or digging. In some cases there will be locations where small 'bore-pits' will be established for the purpose of pulling and splicing the cable. These locations are temporary and will be restored to their original stature soon after they have served their purpose.

Please be assured we will do everything to minimize any inconvenience this activity may cause. Please feel free to contact Carole Baird at 972-318-8825 to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.

Soooo, within a year my neighborhood will have fiber to the premisis and be able to get 15mb down and 2mb up DSL service for $45/month! But wait, there's more!!! Along with the above notice stating intenet, I got another notice:

"Housley Communications, LTD

Dear Resident,
Housley Communications, LTD will be placing telephone cable for Verizon in your area. Work will be done in the utility easement. If the easement is in the back yard, we will need access to it. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office at:"

So Verizon has already contracted a company to do my neighborhood!!! YAYYY!!!! Explains why I've seen Verizon trucks working on overhead lines for the past few weeks in this area. And the telco box is in my back yard, in the corner. However, my fence cuts that corner short (doesn't do a normal square 90 degree in the corner) so the actual box is outside of my fence and accessible via the alley. THIS ROCKS!!!
