Lol, you have two choices tromoss:

1. Play BF on your dialup
2. Place your penis in a vice and crank down

Oddly enough, I would imagine both choices would result in the same amount of pain and discomfort.

HAHAHAH! Actually, I am not sure how well the netcode in BF is, but if it is at leats on the HL level, he may be able to tweak his hardware, then Windoze, then his game to get his ping around 200ms. Scope (one of my clanners) is on 56gay and he pings sub-200ms in *daddy's penis*, generally around 170-180ms. This si with the above tweaks performed. He has yet to mess with his max MTU though, and if he modifies it for the better, he may go even lower. God, could you imagine 150ms latency on a cheap-azz 56gay?!

BF minimum requirements for online play is somewhere around 60k/sec per player. dialup would choke, sputter, and puke on itself. It's strange, though... you see TONS of double digit pings, in fact it's I'd say around 80% of players have low pings. Those with pings higher (meaning lesser connection speeds), I suppose, don't want the frustration.

Then it sounds like what was debated for *seph's a fag*, a net driver optimized for broadband, which can deliver godlike play on broadband, but sucks for dun. Nice. I bet they use that crap in UT2K3 or Awakening...

Hmm, and I just got something quite amusing on Trillian...
MeanBob: i was just looking aout my window

MeanBob: slammed into a parked car
MeanBob: i think he's crying
The Great Sephiroth: lol
MeanBob: i'm gonna go shoot him with my paintball gun

See, my clanners get practice outside *daddy's penis* as well!

Nope, not optimized for broadband. Just that broadband is the only thing that can even think about coping with it.

Then I have to say that it is piss-poor coding considering only 20% of Americans have broadband at this time. Who do they think we are, China? China's population has 20mbps lines to 80% of their population, which would be un-godly here in the USA. So, who's moving to China or Japan with me?

Nope, not 20% yet. Saw the numbers yesterday. 75% of Americans have broadband available, and of those only 10% get it.

There is one HUGE advantage to living in the Raleigh (RTP) area, and that is broadband access... IF I'm not mistaken, Raleigh has the largest concentration of broadband users in the US. I think it's up to 68% or 70% of the Raliegh (RTP) population has Broadband (whether cable, or DSL).

That's one reason cable around here sucks more than usual...

LOL! Yeah I remember your old cable pings. But man, DLink do you remember when I had 56k and pinged better than Ghoda?! He had @home and was generally around 400ms! That's sad.

Granted I know Seph runs an *daddy's penis* server that eats bandwidth like mad, but I just tried to play BF1942 online, and I always had connection problems...regardless what server I connected to, or what my "ping" was reported as...yes yes, I know that Gamespy doesn't give accurate ping ratings...

After connecting to 5 different servers, I couldn't connect to ANY... don't know if EA decided to kill demo MP for the game, or Bellsouth is having a sh!t fit, but it's not playable...

I know what might help...
pair of wire snips, seph's cat5...hmmm...a plan is forming...

j/k seph...I wouldn't cut "your" cat5...after all I bought them...I'd just take the modem, and direct connect to my PC....

Just toss in a linux firewall and do some creative packet shaping on port 27015.

I suggest you do your homework. Each of my players consumes about 5k/sec of bandwidth based onmy current settings. Eight players times five kilobytes equals fourty kilobytes per second. Another way to do your homework is to log into the router while some friends and I are playing and view the statistics under maintenance. I could further improve bandwidth usage if you'd find the book to our router so I can forward JUST the UDP ports to my box. Right now I am forwarding everything on certain ports to my box because I am not sure how to use the telnet setup and I REFUSE to install Adobe Reader just because one fucking company likes PDF format. I've NEVER ran across that before. To be honest I've been debating turning off the firewall to stop a small range of annoying problems that not having proper setup is causing. I had it down twice this week already so Vg could practice without being dropped every thirty seconds. I need that book!

Second, you bought the Cat5 and I payed you for it. I bought the 50ft strand. I also payed you to pick up Cat6 (two rolls) which run to my Linux boxes. So snipping any Cat5 will only hurt you. I use Cat6, and was trying to save to upgrade to gigabit until work started shafting me out of hours. Mmmmm... GIGABIT!

That's 5kB, not 5kb. So 8 players is roughly 40kB, or around 450kb/sec. Now anyone with half a brain knows that even slightly excessive upload on home broadband connections is a killer for latency. Now, you can work around that if you want, look at http://lartc.org/wondershaper/
